What We Know

From our friend Warren Pettit, in the hospital with Will and Angie:

5:50pm PT — A few minutes ago:

I read the following passage to Will and Angie,

You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, and I will exalt you. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

I looked up at Will and he nodded his head.

Earlier this afternoon:

Angie’s brother and sister (John and Kelli) arrived this afternoon…..bittersweet. Will and Angie have now been in the hospital for five days…. it feels like five months. We’ve been waiting for a variety of tests to tell us what we think we already know, but, nobody has walked through the door to put it all together. Then, the supervising medical oncologist came in and we just stared.

It was the word “non-curative” that I remember. She said, based on averages, that Will has weeks to live, possibly more with a regimen of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. It only took minutes and then she was gone.

We all left the room…..Will and Angie wanted to be alone. Later, we came back in. I offered to read the following passage.

You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, and I will exalt you. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

I looked up at Will and he nodded his head.

Will- You are in my thoughts and prayers! I pray for your pain to be less and comfort for your weak body! This is such a hard thing to bear the thought of what you are enduring. I hold the faith God knows and he is carrying you in his arms right now! My prayers are for his miracle of healing but I dont want to be selfish if its not his will but I really want you to sing and walk again here on this earth! Please know many are praying here in Ohio!

I have faith this promise is for you Will and Angie!

Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

We love you, Will. We love you, Angie. Like Brian Wilson once wrote…”Love and Mercy are what we need tonight.”

We pray to God for love and mercy.

I continue to pray for a miracle. However, if that is not in God’s plan, then I pray for your comfort and peace at this very difficult time in your lives.

    Will and Angie-
There are no words to express what I am feeling or thinking or praying right now. On my knees in tears and prayer is all I can fathom to do right now. The Lord has blessed you beyond words and everyone around you for letting us know you and see Him through you even in your hardest hours. We love you so much and are still praying for a miracle.

    Will and Angie-
It is hard to find the “right words” to say in such a situation. We are praying for you and offering big hugs from across the states. I’m so sorry for all the pain you both are enduring and thankful for your support system. Mercy and peace–Janice

Been praying for a lot of things. Hope, peace, love, miracle, you name it.
Thank you so much for the example you have set with “goteamgray.” Your faith is such an encouragement to me as you have faced hardship with strength and determination, but also grace and vulnerability. Thank you for sharing this with me and us.
I thank God for your story, and the privilege to have been close to it at times (still laugh when I recall when you +DJL and JH slept on my floor at Gordon). I thank God that in you he has made a visionary who has chosen to honor Him with your ways and your life.
    Praying for healing.

    Peace:
The LORD your God is with you,
    he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing.

I was going through my oldest email exchanges with Will and found this quote he sent me in 2005 from Blaise Pascal.

“I try as much as possible to let nothing trouble me and to make the
best of everything that happens. I believe this to be a duty, and
that we sin in doing otherwise. For after all, the reason why sins
are sins is that they are contrary to the will of God; and so, since
the essence of sin consists in having a will opposed to what we know
to be God’s will, it seems obvious to me that when He discloses his
will to us through events [and circumstances], it would be a sin not
to adjust oneself to them.” — Blaise Pascal

I pray, presuming for not one moment that God is unable even now to heal, that Will and Angie and all we who are family and friends will adjust ourselves to God’s will as He discloses it in days and weeks to come. Confident in His goodness; pleading for His mercy.
